Winter Sports Kick Start Their Seasons

Posted

At Triton Public Schools, we do a variety of winter sports. All teams have done incredibly well this season, and they look forward to finishing strong.

Triton’s dance captain, 12th grader Topanga Spencer, was asked some questions about her seasons on the Triton Cobras dance team. When thinking about her hopes for the year, she said, “To dance my final season with purpose, passion, and heart!” Another interview was with Hayfield 11th grader Katie Hodge. When asked about her favorite memory so far, she said, “My favorite memories are being with the girls during competitions and having fun.”

Next, the Triton wrestlers have been having a good season so far. Senior Andrew Swenson commented on how the season was going so far. He said, "I've gone to one tournament, 2-2. I did end up fracturing my wrist, but if there's time left in the season I hope to wrestle.” 9th grader Faith Jeter commented, “wrestling works out my whole body and it's a lot of physical work for a long time.” In thinking about what got her into wrestling, Faith responded, “seeing other people loving it, and I just wanted to try something new.”

Another winter activity that Triton students participate in is hockey. The boys Dodge County Wildcats hockey team has recently recognized Goalie Wes Wegner for their “shutout” award where he saved the goal 32 times. They also recently had a teacher appreciation game where athletes invited teachers to their game and recognized them. Their record is currently 8 wins and 5 losses.

Furthermore, the Triton girls’ basketball team has had an eventful first half of the season, with a current record of 9 wins and 4 losses. Norah Freiderich, a senior on the team, was asked a few questions on how she feels the season has been going so far with this being her senior year. She said, “We have been pretty successful, and it’s been fun.” When asked what the most impactful moment that basketball has shown, Freiderich replied, “Definitely the conversations with Coach Hammitt and why she’s here coaching and learning how to reciprocate it.”

The Triton boys’ basketball team has also had an active first half of the season, with a current record of 11 wins and 3 losses. Varsity Coach Hanegraaf was interviewed and asked how the season's going so far. He said, “The team as a whole needs to work on defense and rebounding but they are still growing as a team.” When asked about how optimistic he is for the team for playoffs he replies “Very.” Both Triton varsity basketball teams have had thrilling first halves of the season and are looking forward to the second half.

All Triton winter sports will soon come to an end, but all competitors are looking forward to ending their season with playoffs. Good luck at playoffs, Triton Cobras!
